Gibraltar figures attract attention: more than 33,000 inhabitants are concentrated in just 7km2 of which most correspond to an uninhabited area, the immense rocky structure of the Gibraltar Rock.
With a theoretical density of more than 4000 inhabitants per square kilometer, to better appreciate these dimensions and limitations when building, it is best to observe the Rock of Gibraltar from the air, and that can be done with a helicopter tour, something we have also done in Barcelona.
And observe, of course, the enormous dimensions of the Rock of Gibraltar proper.
For fly by helicopter over Gibraltar There is only one company authorized to do so from Gibraltar itself and its operation, which is not history, is quite recent.
Although FonnaFly has been flying since 1970 in Norway, where it was born as a seaplane operator, it is only since May 2019 that it offers tourist helicopter flights in Gibraltar.
In Norway, they have 15 devices at various bases, with services ranging from cargo, passenger transport on charter flights or equipment for the shipping industry to, of course, flights for tourist purposes.
In Gibraltar, they have the only base outside Norway and the only helicopter in their fleet outside the country.
It is an Airbus H130 (EC130B4), with a maximum capacity of 4 passengers behind and another 3 in front, next to the pilot.
This is one of the quietest civil helicopters on the market and, in fact, during my flight my companions were heard better - through the headphones we all wore - than the outside sound of the propellers.
The device takes off from the runway of the Gibraltar International Airport, a few meters from the passenger terminal. One of the peculiarities of the airport itself, won to the sea, is that vehicles and pedestrians circulate through it, as you can see in the video.
At video of the helicopter tour over Gibraltar we can see how we go around the Rock twice, so that passengers on both sides can have a perspective on it.
From Morocco, and Ceuta, to the Bay of Algeciras, from the Line of the Conception to maritime traffic, from the holes in the rock where canyons peeked to the beaches and port of Gibraltar, the approximately 15-minute helicopter tour over Gibraltar They give us an excellent perspective of the privileged location and growth difficulties of the British colony.
