Ereaga beach in Getxo

"We are landing at Bilbao airport and the outside temperature is 29 degrees." This is how the Vueling pilot welcomed us to the Basque Country. We were in mid-October and, contrary to the usual weather of late autumn, a splendid sun and an unusual temperature welcomed us warmly.

We move to the Tamarises hotel whose windows overlook the beautiful promenade that extends over Ereaga beach in Getxo.

There are few places that enjoy such a great beach at their feet. The beach of Ereaga extends at the mouth of the Nervion estuary So its waters are calm. With the great weather it was no longer surprising us and we could see in the middle of October in the Basque Country a good group of people sunbathing and bathing in its waters.

We chose to approach one of the bars near the promenade. Some stairs helped us sit down and freshen up with the first cold beer with pintxos in Getxo. Under a clear sky and an August sun we enjoy the views of Mount Serrantes, the opulent mansions and palaces of Algorta and the nearby Portugalete on the other side of the estuary.

For more than 15 years I had not visited Bizcaia and since then the memory of a gray horizon populated by factories, large buildings and smoke from the chimneys has given way to a more serene and much less combative environment. Undoubtedly, the Guggenheim effect in Bilbao has served so that populations bordering the Nervion estuary receive a good face lift.

Anyone who has not set foot in the city in a long time, Getxo may suggest factories and industry. However, the reality today is very different and in its streets a dynamic activity with a variety of interesting visits ranging from a postcard of an authentic fishing port like the one of Something, passing by amazing mansions whose mortgage would leave more than one Ibex company in red numbers -or not-, panoramic views of the Atlantic from the watchtower of Galea Point and modernity symbolized with the impressive suspension bridge that links Getxo with Portugalete.
